While Body Mass Index (BMI) provides a fast general screening for weight classification, it does not distinguish between skeletal muscle mass, adipose tissue, or metabolic energy requirements. To plan nutrition and fitness effectively, understanding BMR and TDEE is essential.

What Is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)?

Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest simply to sustain vital involuntary functions — breathing, blood circulation, cellular repair, and neurological activity. BMR accounts for 60% to 75% of your total daily calorie burn.

The most accurate clinical formula is the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation: For Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) + 5. For Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) − 161.

Calculating Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

TDEE represents your complete caloric expenditure across 24 hours, incorporating BMR, Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), exercise, and the thermic effect of food. It is calculated by multiplying BMR by an activity factor:

Sedentary (desk job, little exercise): BMR × 1.2 | Light Activity (1-3 days/week exercise): BMR × 1.375 | Moderate Activity (3-5 days/week): BMR × 1.55 | Heavy Activity (6-7 days/week): BMR × 1.725.

Setting Sustainable Caloric Targets

For fat loss: Consume 300-500 kcal below your TDEE (a moderate deficit that burns ~0.5 kg of body fat per week without sacrificing lean muscle tissue or suppressing thyroid function).

For muscle gain: Consume 200-300 kcal above TDEE with adequate dietary protein (1.6 to 2.2g per kg of body weight).
